In their initial inquiry, Carly and David described their wedding vision as “hobbit garden party”. They had us at “hobbit”! As a couple of Lord of the Rings geeks we were thrilled to receive such that email. Carly and David didn’t want anything too on the nose for their wedding, just something that felt reminiscent of the cottage gardens you see in the Shire. At once undone and wild while also feeling cultivated and cared for.

An Archway Adorned in Hop Vines and a Ceremony Meadow Inspired by the Gardens of The Shire

We adorned the Oak Room archway at Calamigos Ranch with an overgrown garland of fresh hops vines. Dried oakleaf hydrangea and mauve toned sedum accented the archway as well. Thank goodness we decided to use such hardy elements for this because the temperature that day was a whopping 109 degrees. It’s a wonder that the flowers (and humans!) held up as well as they did during the outdoor ceremony. On the ground, surrounding Carly and David, we designed a semi circle meadow of plants and floral arrangements in assorted terra cotta pots. We wanted this to feel like they were standing in the front garden of Bilbo’s house. Potted ferns, herbs and angel vines really helped to fill out this vision. Florals in hues of gold, chocolate, cream and mauve solidified the end of summer season.

Seasonal Cottage Flowers, Candles, Lanterns and Elvish Design Details for the Fantasy Reception Space

For the reception the guests were seated indoors under a canopy of draped ivory fabric. Carly and David’s sweetheart table was framed by the epic geometric window well at the Oak Room. The window and the fabric draped ceiling felt like something right out of Lothlorien or Rivendell. The guest tables were adorned with a cacophony of potted plants, moroccan lanterns, and bud vases filled with locally grown roses, cosmos and scabiosa. Each table felt like an overgrown magical meadow.

A Candlelight Reception Makes for an Incredibly Magical Evening

Although they can sometimes add to the cost of your table decor more than you may expect, candles are ALWAYS worth the price. After the sun goes down the warm glow of a true flame cannot be matched. The way the soft light plays with the silhouettes of the flowers and illuminates the glassware adds such a magical element to an already beautiful scene.
